An early deficit

The match started like the last two: the Wings being poorly dominated in shooting.

Jonatan Berggren had a good chance from the left circle, set up by Joe Veleno, around the 11th minute. It was the Wings’ third shot on goal; the Sabers had a dozen at the time – and a 1-0 lead. There wasn’t enough time spent on penalties in Friday’s practice after the New York Islanders scored three goals on Thursday: four minutes into the game, with rookie Marco Kasper In the penalty box, the Sabers – who had the NHL’s worst man advantage at 0 for 22 in eight games – celebrated their first power play goal of the season when Jason Zucker scored on an attempted second chance. Tage Thompson, who assisted on that goal, scored one of his own in the 12th minute as miscommunication between Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, coupled with a poor line change, led to Buffalo taking a 1-2 lead. 2-0.

The Wings were able to limit the damage when Alex DeBrincat scored his fourth goal of the season. Dylan Larkin put the puck behind the Buffalo net; Lucas Raymond’s hard work in the corner allowed DeBrincat to pass the puck in front, who briefly passed to Seider before recovering the puck and beating Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 14:43.

Go back up

In the second period, Thompson and Michael Rasmussen traded goals in the first four minutes. Raymond tied the game on a Buffalo power play, taking advantage of Jeff Petry driving the net and distracting Rasmus Dahlin – who assisted on Buffalo’s first three goals – and giving Raymond space to shoot the puck high in the net, earning his first career shorthanded goal. at 11:02 a.m.

Instead of continuing the momentum, the Wings fell behind again when Bowen Byram scored at 15:54.

The Wings (4-4-0) play again Sunday, when they host the Edmonton Oilers (6 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Detroit) at Little Caesars Arena.
