Letter: NAV CANADA is “actively” working to take aircraft noise into account

The non-profit company says it is “sensitive” to the operational impacts of aircraft on communities in Metro Vancouver.

The editor:

Concerning: Letter: Airplane noise ‘is pollution,’ says Port Moody resident (October 14, 2024)

Regarding the letter (…) we would like to share some information with your readers.

Regarding the Vancouver Airspace Modernization Project (VAMP), we would like to reassure residents that no changes have yet been implemented regarding the Vancouver International Airport.

While robust public consultation was conducted in late 2022 and early 2023 regarding this project, NAV CANADA is currently working alongside Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to evaluate the valuable feedback provided by communities.

We want to be clear: NAV CANADA is sensitive to the impacts that flight operations can have on communities.

Airspace changes are made only when necessary for the safety and efficiency of air transportation.

The airspace surrounding Metro Vancouver needs to be modernized. our goal is to provide optimal airspace design that ensures long-term operational safety, meets the growing demand for air transport in the region in the coming years, and mitigates noise impacts.

As such, NAV CANADA works actively and continuously with the Vancouver Airport Authority on noise management.

Aircraft noise management is a joint effort of multiple organizations and all aviation industry partners (airport authorities, airlines, NAV CANADA) work together to reduce the impact of aircraft noise where safe and feasible.

As our review progresses, we are committed to providing appropriate updates and ultimately sharing a consultation report that will summarize the comments received, airspace design recommendations, timelines implementation and next steps.

Updates to this process will be posted on our website.
