Eli Tomac wins 2024 World Supercross opener in Canada, Shane McElrath wins SX2 division

Eli Tomac scored Vancouver’s first Supercross victory in 20 years by edging out Ken Roczen in the opening round of the Supercross World Championship at BC Place.

Roczen won the SuperPole with a time of 50.742 seconds, but Tomac and Joey Savatgy were not far off the pace.

German rider and reigning WSX champion Roczen maintained that speed in the first moto, but in the three-race format it was Tomac who took the overall victory after winning the second and third races .

“It was a fantastic night of racing,” Tomac said in a statement. “Kenny rode well in the first two races and we fought there. I found my rhythm in the last two races and everything went well. The energy from the Vancouver crowd was incredible and I can’t wait for the next round in Perth.

Finishing third, second and third respectively in all three motos, Savatgy’s consistency easily placed him third overall.

Colt Nichols is fourth and Vince Friese rounds out the top five.

The SX2 division matched the early character of the 450. Defending champion and wildcard Max Anstie won the SuperPole and took a Moto 1 win over Ryder Kingsford. Anstie remained in contention for the overall victory until he crashed in Moto 3 and finished ninth in that race.

Also mirroring the WSX class, overall winner Shane McElrath stepped up his game by winning the second and third motos.

“It was a good race,” McElrath said. “I had a slow start to the evening, but I regrouped and got the win in the next two. It was just about minimizing the mistakes, but overall it was a great night of racing. It’s been great fun racing in front of a new crowd and I’m now looking forward to being in Perth.

Anstie’s fall eliminated any chance of victory, but his early successes were enough to place him second overall.

Canadian Cole Thompson completed the podium.

Enzo Lopes and Coty Schock, fourth, complete the top five.
