A 56-year-old man was treated for life-threatening injuries after Winnipeg police say he was attacked by a man armed with a machete.

Police said the victim was walking eastbound on Ellice Avenue near Beverley Street when a man he did not know approached him from behind around 4:15 a.m. Friday. The attack was unprovoked, according to a press release issued Sunday.

The man showed up at the Health Sciences Center on William Avenue with serious injuries and received medical treatment, the release states.

Police describe the accused as an Indigenous man, five feet and ten inches tall and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

No arrests have yet been made, police said.

The Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate and obtain an updated description of the accused.
