Perth and Kinross school strikes enter second week

BBC Scotland News also spoke to some council leaders who said the tender could not be reopened without government help.

The strike caused practical problems for some parents in Perth and Kinross who had to arrange childcare or take time off work.

Many closed schools are offering distance learning so children can work from home.

The council also said payments would be made to families who were unable to benefit from free school meals because of the strike.

Unison is planning a national ballot among council staff to see if they would also go on strike, but is yet to confirm details.

Any poll would likely last several weeks. If the union was given a mandate for action in more council areas, it would have to give two weeks’ notice of strike action.

In the coming weeks, councils are expected to find out how much money the Scottish Government plans to give them for next year and how much they could increase council tax.

Unison insists it still wants to see an improvement in salaries this financial year.

But the focus may shift to securing a bigger “restorative” pay rise from next April.
