“Increase the economic impact of aquaculture”

Funding for aquaculture research could transform aquaculture not just in Scotland but across the world.

The Center for Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation recently announced funding for three projects, each involving research into fish health, particularly regarding climate change.

SAIC is a Scotland-based organization working “to reduce the environmental footprint and increase the economic impact of aquaculture”.

To do this, SAIC frequently funds research, promotes education, and connects businesses to advance aquaculture. According to the Global Seafood AllianceSAIC has transformed “nearly £11 million ($14.3 million) into critical research worth more than £71 million ($92.9 million). These initiatives have spurred the creation of spin-off companies, new products and innovative solutions to industry challenges.

These newly funded programs add to SAIC’s long list of contributions, and the Global Seafood Alliance covers all three funded programs in detail. They include a “holographic imaging system to detect and monitor micro-jellyfish,” an “automated harmful algal bloom profiling system,” “predictive biomarkers of Atlantic salmon gill health,” and “strategies inventory management in the event of outbreaks of proliferative kidney disease.

Advances in aquaculture are key to developing sustainable methods of harvesting seafood. Climate change is wreaking havoc on our oceans – warming, pollutedAnd acid oceans kill fish, disrupting food chains and fragile ecosystems.

Through conservation efforts, there may be hope for us. Restoration projects aim to rebuild habitats, such as Perche Lake in Minnesota. Habitat restoration helps endangered fish increase their populations, as bull trout in the Klamath Basin of Oregon.

Project by project, researcher by researcher, incredible progress is being made and it is not slowing down.

Linsey Dickson told the Global Seafood Alliance that she hopes that “by applying cutting-edge technologies and evidence-based practices, these projects will be ready to tackle some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.”
