Windy start to the week, with high fire danger for southern Colorado

Today’s forecast:
A strong trough of low pressure moving across the West Coast early this week will bring several days of impacts and unsettled weather conditions to southern Colorado. First comes the wind, with wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph today across the I-25 corridor and eastern Plains. Due to the descending wind and dry air, a red flag warning was issued from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Forecast for Canon City: High: 78; Weak: 50. Although we do not expect any red flag warnings today in Fremont County due to higher relative humidity, we do expect a warm and windy start to the week, with high gusts around 30 mph.

Forecast for Woodland Park: High: 67; Weak: 39. A windy and mild start to the work week in Teller County, with dry skies Monday and wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Tri-Lakes Forecast: High: 70s; Weak: Hot and windy, with red flag warnings in effect today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Plains Forecast: High: 70s/80s; Weak: 40s/50s. Red Flag Warning conditions will be met today and tomorrow in the High Plains. Gusts today will be around 35 mph, with gusts on Tuesday up to around 60 mph.

Forecast for Walsenburg and Trinidad: High: 70s; Weak: 40s/50s. A mild and windy morning will give way to a warm and windy afternoon, with Red Flag Warnings in effect today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mountain Forecast: High: 50s; Weak: 20s/30s. Windy during the day, with gusts reaching around 40 mph. Increasing clouds this evening will bring snow to some of our state’s mountain ranges, with the heaviest snowfall this evening favoring the San Juans and La Garitas.

Extended Outlook Forecast:
Another increase in wind is expected Tuesday, leading to a new round of red flag warnings. Gusts in the Pikes Peak region are expected to be between 40 and 50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph over the Eastern Plains and south of the I-25 corridor. Humidity will increase behind a late evening cold front Tuesday, with the potential for rain and snow showers Wednesday. Whatever falls in the springs are unlikely to accumulate, but areas around the Palmer Divide and Teller County could see a trace of up to 2″ of snow.

Our high on Wednesday won’t warm until the mid 40s in Colorado Springs, with our first frost of the year following Wednesday evening with our low in the mid 20s. Halloween looks dry and pleasant, with highs to the mid 50s during the day. Halloween night will be chilly for trick-or-treating in Southern Colorado, so consider a layer over or under the costume this year.
