The City of Mississauga begins its annual fall leaf collection.

Every year, in the fall, the City offers leaf collection by vacuum on streets that are more than 35 years old and have many mature trees, indicates the City’s website.

Residents who live in an area that is part of the leaf collection program are advised to rake leaves into neat piles at the side of the road or in their ditch a day or two before collection week begins.

The road and curbside drains must be cleared of leaves, while parked cars and any sports equipment must be removed from the road.

The City said objects such as wood, brush or bricks cannot be mixed with the leaves and no garbage bags or bins should be placed on top of the leaves.

The City has divided the areas planned for collection into three zones: yellow, blue and green, with the yellow one expected to begin this week.

Here is an overview of the schedule:

Yellow Zone

  • October 28 to November 1
  • November 18 to November 22

Blue Zone

  • November 4 to November 8
  • November 25 to November 29

Green zone

  • November 11 to November 15
  • December 2 to December 6

See the map below from the City to see the locations of the different zones:

Rain or snow could impact the schedule, officials said.

If someone misses leaf pickup or if more leaves fall after the vacuums arrive, residents can place the leaves in yard waste bags when they are collected or drop them off at a recycling center, where fees apply.

“You can compost your leaves or spread them at the base of your trees to fertilize the soil by protecting it from extreme temperatures,” specifies the City.
