New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole expected to be unavailable for Game 4 of World Series

As the New York Yankees trend toward an early exit, it remains to be seen whether Gerrit Cole will take the mound again in October.

The Yankees are down 2-0 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, meaning they could be eliminated as early as Tuesday night. Manager Aaron Boone has already started Clarke Schmidt as the starter for Game 3, followed by Luis Gil in Game 4.

Boone chose Gil over Cole, who started Game 1 Friday. According to Andy Martino, SNY Insiderthe Yankees have not considered or discussed Cole as a replacement for the Rookie of the Year candidate, even though they trail 3-0.

According to Martino’s sources, there’s not a 0% chance Cole takes the mound, but as of now, “it’s not on the radar.”

Cole handed out a gem in Game 1, allowing four hits and one earned run in 6.0 innings. However, he was pulled after throwing only 88 pitches and New York lost in extra innings.

In each of his four postseason outings, Cole threw between 80 and 89 pitches. He broke 100 shots four times during the regular season – including in his final outing of the regular season – despite missing the first three months with elbow inflammation.

Cole is 1-0 with a 2.82 ERA so far in the postseason, improving to 11-6 with a 2.91 ERA in the postseason for his career.

The 34-year-old right-hander has only taken three days off once as a professional, against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the 2020 ALDS. Even though Cole racked up nine strikeouts tonight There, allowing only one hit and one run, the Yankees lost 2-1.

Cole, now a six-time All-Star and AL Cy Young winner, seems unlikely to find himself in the same place four years later. If he wants to guide New York to a critical victory, it will have to come in Game 5.
