20 new Honda Civic Type R among 45 cars stolen in $1.3 million Australian port heist

The thieves made off with a total of 45 vehicles, 21 of which have since been recovered by local authorities.

A group of thieves last week made off with brand new, shiny vehicles worth A$2 million ($1.3 million) from a storage yard in Port Melbourne, Australia, the last week, including 20 FL5. Honda Civic Type RS.

The thefts occurred between 3 p.m. on October 20 and 6:30 a.m. the following morning. According to Victoria Police, two men and two women forced their way onto the property, breaking security checks to take a total of 45 unregistered vehicles. They weren’t exactly picky about their loot, going after a range of models and makes in what is one of the most brazen car thefts Melbourne has seen in years.

In addition to the impressive total of 20 Civic Type R’s, the thieves also stole three Skoda Kamiqs, five Skoda Kodiaqs, one VW Golf R, three VW Tiguans, three Skoda Superbs, two Honda ZR-Vs, two GMW Tank 300s, one Honda Accordtwo Honda CR-Vs and a pair of Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. It wasn’t just a simple handling; it was a full-scale shopping spree, with the culprits apparently taking whatever they liked.

As of October 23, authorities had managed to recover 21 of the stolen vehicles, although they have remained tight-lipped about which specific models were found and which are still there.

A 32-year-old woman was also charged for her role in the theft. She faces charges of reckless driving, possession of false plates, driving without a license and possession of 1 to 4 butanediol. She was found after being spotted driving one of the allegedly stolen vehicles on local streets.

It was reported that the thieves gained access to the locked parking lot and then used one of the Sprinters to push aside the concrete barricades. How they managed to start the cars remains a mystery, as it’s unclear whether they got the keys or had some high-tech trick up their sleeve.

THE FL5 generation Civic Type R was launched in Australia in late 2022, with a starting price of AU$72,600 (~$47,900), making it around AU$12,000 (~$7,900) more expensive than its predecessor. Despite the high starting price, demand for the car was strong, so much so that the first 18 months of allocation were quickly sold out.
