Lombardo activates Nevada National Guard to support law enforcement on Election Day

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo announced he will activate a small contingent of the state National Guard as a precaution to support law enforcement on Election Day next week.

The governor’s office said Monday that the move reflects Nevada’s usual preparation for past elections and is intended to ensure all possible resources are in place to deal with possible challenges.

“We do not believe these personnel will need to be deployed,” Republican Lombardo said in a statement. “As a first responder, I know firsthand the importance of being prepared, and this decision reflects my commitment to Election Day safety and preparation.”

Activation will be limited to supporting state and local resources on Tuesday, November 5. Sixty members will be activated on standby and stationed at National Guard installations in Carson City and Las Vegas.

They will be available to support Election Day preparations, such as traffic control and building security. They can also coordinate and facilitate communication across the state if additional support is needed.

“I share Governor Lombardo’s commitment to safety, preparedness and transparency,” Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar, the state’s top elections official and a Democrat, said in a statement. press release. “This proactive move helps ensure we are making the most of our available resources across Nevada. Our election officials and law enforcement officials have been preparing for years for the November 5 election. This frees up their resources on Election Day so they can focus on delivering safe and secure elections.
