Forget Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 – here’s why I’m more excited about iOS 18.2

Apple has finally brought Apple Intelligence to the masses, with the first wave of AI features for iPhone bundled into the iOS 18.1 update. But that’s not all Apple Intelligence will have to offer. In fact, you could say that the features currently rolling out are only scratching the surface.

Apple announced a number of Apple Intelligence features at WWDC2024but we only get a handful in iOS 18.1. Like the iOS 18.2 beta for developers has already shown us, much more impressive AI-based features are expected to arrive in the near future. This includes support for ChatGPT, iPhone16-exclusive Visual intelligenceAI image generation and more.

As Important as iOS 18.1 Is, Here’s Why You Should Be More Excited About iOS 18.2

If you look at a list of all the AI features that come with iOS 18.1, you’ll see that the list is rather long. But look a little closer and you may notice that these features are rather simple and unpretentious. They’re useful in the right circumstances, there’s no doubt about that, but Apple hasn’t really come up with the flashier AI features you’d expect.

On the contrary, the most interesting features, like Cleaning up photos or give Siri improves her conversational skills – that’s all Apple should have done a long time ago. GoogleIt is Magic Editorwhich works much like Photo Clean Up, has been around since last year and was arguably a more advanced version of Magic Eraser which debuted in 2021. Likewise, Apple has long been criticized for neglecting Siri, and it was Long overdue for new features. and upgrades.

Other features like Prioritized Messages, Summaries, Enhanced Search in the Photos app, and everything else Apple Intelligence offers on day one aren’t the most exciting features Apple could offer. It’s definitely not the sort of thing that generates hype or forces people to upgrade to Apple Intelligence compatible phones like the iPhone 15 Pro And iPhone16 series.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how useful or valuable a feature set is. If they’re not interesting, people just won’t care. Since Apple is relying heavily on rolling out Apple Intelligence, it needs potential customers to have a bit more of a positive attitude. This is where iOS 18.2 comes in.

iOS 18.2 has fewer features, but a lot more promise

From what we’ve seen so far of the iOS 18.2 beta, there aren’t as many AI features to dive into. But the caliber of these features is much better than anything iOS 18.2 currently has to offer.

Apple will offer AI image generation in iOS 18.2, in the form of the Image Playground app, the sketch-to-picture Image Wand and its custom emoji generation feature, also known as Genmoji.

But the real excitement comes from the title feature, with Apple adding support for ChatGPT And Visual intelligence in the iOS 18.2 beta.

Visual Intelligence is exclusive to the iPhone 16 and is best described as Apple’s version of Google Lens. Or an “AI Vision,” if you prefer, because it uses a mix of the iPhone 16’s camera and AI analysis to work. The idea is that the camera sees something around you in the real world and the AI figures out what you might want from it.

So, if it’s a menu or sign in a foreign language, you’ll have it translated. Alternatively, if Visual Intelligence spots a poster for a show, it may offer to create an event in your calendar. We’ve also seen it identify the breed of a dog, identify details about a store or business, or summarize visible blocks of text. According to my colleague Richard Pridayvisual intelligence still needs work, but it’s already showing promise, especially since you can access it directly via the Camera control button.

ChatGPT offers many additional features in iOS 18.2, but the main benefit is how it connects to Siri. Siri may have gotten an upgrade in iOS 18.1, but it’s nowhere near the same level as true AI chatbots. The general idea is that you can use Siri to converse with ChatGPT, asking it questions and providing prompts that Siri can’t handle on its own. But that’s not all.

Other features include adding OpenAIfrom image and text processing to visual intelligence, image generation via Image Playground, the possibility of analyze your iPhone screen and integration with Apple’s Writing Tools feature to improve the quality of any text you generate.

Needless to say, it looks like iOS 18.2 will add a lot more features to Apple Intelligence. There are plenty of reasons to be excited as we approach the public release later this year.

Apple’s initial promise will only be kept with iOS 18.4

Despite the size of the iOS 18.2 update, it won’t fulfill all of Apple Intelligence’s promises. That won’t happen until we see all of Siri’s upgrades, such as personal context and screen awareness. According to Mark Gurman, these features are “being considered” for iOS 18.3, but the bulk of these features probably won’t arrive until iOS 18.4 launches somewhere in 2025.

Not only will these features be a huge upgrade for Siri; This launch should mark the point where we have access to all of the Apple Intelligence features Apple announced earlier this year. Although at this point we’ll likely learn more about the unannounced AI features Apple has planned closer to WWDC 2025. But at least we will be able to properly assess what Apple Intelligence has accomplished.
