Bungie fixes Destiny 2 Perk RNG after massive community bug hunt

In the weeks since the release of Destiny 2’s latest dungeon, Vesper’s Host, players have become convinced that certain combinations of perks on legendary weapons are much rarer than others, or even impossible to obtain. Bungie recently acknowledged that there was indeed a bug affecting the RNG of legendary weapon perks and has now shared more details about the bug, as well as a timeline for fixes and compensation.

The entire RNG perk saga has been dubbed “Weight rack” by the community, after players accused Bungie of having a secret perk weighting system in Destiny 2’s backend. The issue came to the forefront after the release of Vesper’s Host, when players noticed that it was almost impossible to get the new VS Chill Inhibitor Grenade Launcher with its most sought-after perk combination: Envious Arsenal and Bait and Switch.

Although a single person’s inability to get the Chill Inhibitor god roll could be attributed to RNG and bad luck, some players suspected it was happening on a larger scale. Promoter Newwho created a third-party analytics tool RaidHub for Destiny 2, created a new tool who could track the benefits at scale and managed to discover a distinct pattern.

Data shows that every weapon has a dead zone where certain perk combinations are much less likely to be dropped. In fact, out of thousands of dropouts tracked, only seven people managed to get the chill inhibitor with its ideal combination of benefits.

Bungie has now acknowledged this issue and identified the bug that caused it, and is working on a fix. “While we have inspected our content and confirmed that each perk is weighted equally, an issue in the RNG perk pool is the culprit here,” an update on the Destiny 2 X Account read.

The most recent update of Bungie revealed that a patch is planned for November 5 to remove the issue. “As this hotfix will impact game-wide system code, we are giving the team a little more time to fully validate the changes needed to resolve this issue,” the update states.

Bungie is also seeking rewards for players who have not only been affected by this bug – potentially for years without realizing it – but who have come together as a community to identify and solve a mystery. “We’re exploring a few options to not only thank many of you for your data analysis, but also to put perk weapons in your hands with lower than expected RNG chances,” Bungie said.

For now, players can use a code provided in Bungie’s message to collect the Conquerors of the Infinite emblem. The code “VHT-6A7-3MM” can be used on Bungie’s website to hang the emblem. Meanwhile, more tech-minded fans can look forward to a promised in-depth look at what caused this confusing bug and how the team at Bungie managed to fix it.
