Winnipeg encampment cleaned up after fire

A camp along the Assiniboine River was cleared Monday following a fire.

According to the City of Winnipeg, crews have been removing debris left from a fire at the site near the Granite Curling Club. He notes that the camp has not been closed and no residents have been displaced.

The city added that it has a standardized process for responding to homeless encampments, which includes regular health checks from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. He notes that he does not disturb any encampment, except in cases of risk to public safety.

Winnipeg said it forwards all reports of active encampments to support agencies that work with residents to find alternative housing. The city only dismantles an encampment when it is confirmed to be abandoned.
