FAQ for Halloween Week 2024

Here’s a weather guide through Halloween for the Denver area.

1. When will Denver experience its first frost of the season?
Denver officially reached 32°F on October 25, marking its first freeze of the season. That’s about two weeks later than the average first frost date for the city. However, this was DIA and many places in the region have yet to experience a frost, with some potentially setting records for the last first frost in decades.

For places that haven’t frozen yet, this has been pushing the limit for decades. We crunched the numbers through 10/27 and here are the places that have set a last record freeze or potentially will this week at two different times: since 1990 and since 1970. The blue marks indicate that 2024 has set a new record. Red marks indicate that 2024 threatens the record.

2. What type of weather can we expect for Halloween week?
After a mild start to the week, temperatures will drop significantly from Tuesday, with the coldest day expected on Wednesday. The wind will be extremely strong for many of us. An arriving storm system will bring rain and snow to the state, along with much cooler temperatures. We expect the first widespread freeze for metro/Front Range areas by Thursday morning.

3. Will cold weather bring snow to Denver?
While the mountains are expected to receive significant snowfall, with some areas possibly reaching more than a foot, only some precipitation is forecast for Denver. There is a slight chance of showers today through Wednesday – a brief burst of snow Wednesday morning, with accumulation possible and some slippery areas for commuting and the morning. We will closely monitor trends related to this topic today and provide an update on Wednesday’s snowfall potential for the urban corridor if necessary.

4. What will the weather be like for Halloween?
Halloween is currently looking cool and mostly dry across the state. Highs will be in the 50s and 40s, so plan for cool temperatures, especially when the sun sets Thursday evening.

5. How cold will it be at night during Halloween week?
Overnight lows are expected to drop into the mid to low 20s for Halloween morning, with some models predicting subzero temperatures through the weekend. This will be the first frost in many areas.

6. What is causing the sudden drop in temperatures?
A strong trough is moving toward the Four Corners region, bringing with it a significant mass of cold air. This will result in below average temperatures across the state, especially Wednesday through Thursday morning.

7. Will there still be snow after Halloween?
Another storm system is possible early next week, but details are still uncertain. We are monitoring its development and encourage you to stay informed of the forecasts, which leads us to…
