How the time change affects your health and temperatures

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Darkness arriving earlier in the evening can impact not only your health, but temperatures as well.

On Sunday, November 3, the fall time change will take place. Sunsets will occur before 5 p.m. each day until January 19 due to the time change.

Time changes not only impact what time it gets dark, but also your health. This time change disrupts the sleep habits of more than 300 million people. Hawaii and Arizona are the only two states that do not observe the time change.

There is scientific evidence that indicates an increased risk of adverse health effects, such as heart attacks and strokes, due to the time change. The risk of car accidents is also increasing.

Temperatures will drop on average throughout the remainder of fall and winter.

Additionally, less daylight means cooler than average temperatures during the rest of the fall and into winter. Highs in Nashville will drop from 60 on average in November to 40 on average in January.

Benjamin Franklin invented the concept of daylight saving time in 1784, as a way to save money on candles and lamp oil, but it was not implemented in the United States until 1981.
