JMCGH Staff and Former Patients Gather for Cardiac Recovery Reunion

JACKSON, Tenn. — It was a special day at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital as former patients were able to return for a special event.

It was the first time since Covid that the hospital was able to organize this event. Several former heart patients were able to meet each other and the team that helped them regain their health. We spoke with one of them about what today means to them.

“Today is very important for me because of the Impella that was put into it. I am convinced that she essentially saved my life. I just wanted to come back and meet the teams, the people that are here and Dr. Wright,” said former patient Scott Knight.

For those who work, in the hospital and see patients every day, it is good to step back and talk with those you have helped. Dr. Wright explained more about why this is a nice time.

“Well, it’s the ‘why’ you know? I think a lot of times as surgeons we spend a lot of time worrying about potential problems and complications. That’s kind of how we have “We don’t spend enough time celebrating these successes, talking to our patients and thanking them for entrusting their lives to us,” said cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Ted Wright.

The “Impella” Scott mentioned earlier is a device that can help pump blood to the heart. It has helped so many people and continues to do so today.

“This provides a margin of safety in very complex patients. It’s been a wonderful addition for us,” Dr. Knight said.

Dr. Wright said the Impella device has improved Scott’s condition immensely and technology like this will continue to help others. Dr. Wright also mentioned that he looks forward to many more such events in the future.
