The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra announces its return

There is new hope for the return of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra.

A little over a year ago, the symphony abruptly canceled its 2023/2024 season just days before its scheduled start.

On September 19, 2023, the organization announced that it needed to secure $2 million by the end of the week to avoid insolvency.

Despite last-ditch fundraising efforts, the organization filed for bankruptcy on September 22, leaving approximately 66 musicians and staff members without jobs.

However, on Thursday, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra (KWS) announced that the bankruptcy had been canceled after a proposal to creditors received unanimous support and approval from the Ontario Superior Court.

“The Board of Directors is excited to work with KWS musicians to continue a nearly eight-decade legacy of bringing audiences a diverse lineup of live concerts and outreach programs,” said Bill Poole, chairman of the KWS. KWS Board of Directors. press release. “We are excited to define and realize a strategic and artistic vision for the future of the KWS, continuing the orchestra’s long-standing commitment to providing exceptional live musical experiences as a vibrant part of our community.”

KWS plans to work with musicians for two concerts at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kitchener to end the year.

The first concert, On Remembrance and Hope, will take place on November 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The second concert, KWS Holiday Celebration, will take place on December 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Previously, the symphony had taken up residence at the Center de la Place for more than 40 years. It is unclear whether the symphony will return to its former venue at this time.

In the meantime, the symphony is still collect donations online to finance concerts and create a structure for the future.
