Brawls and house shaking: Travis Scott’s concert at Eden Park descends into chaos

Many videos show teenagers smiling as they launch a flurry of punches and kicks at a roaring crowd surrounding them.

Another dramatic video shows a boy being flipped through the air as onlookers film and applaud.

A Herald Entertainment reporter who joined the crowd last night said it seemed like the bands wanted to “have fun” before the show started.

“Talking to friends who were in the mosh after participating in the mosh, they said a lot of people quit for the fun of it.”

He said “fight clubs” were a typical feature of Scott’s concerts.

“Thefts are quite common at Travis Scott concerts, and similar incidents have occurred recently at his concerts in Australia.

“Travis and his fans often encourage the anti-social behavior we’ve seen happen, so it’s no surprise that these ‘fight clubs’ formed beforehand, without music to entertain people.”

He said the concert was “extremely loud” and his roommates at his home, 1km from the venue, said the walls were “literally shaking”.

Nicola, a regular at the concert, told Newstalk ZB’s Marcus Lush last night that there was “no music or warming up” which she believes contributed to the fighting. She said a DJ came in at 8 p.m. for 15 minutes, then Travis came in at 9 p.m.

When fighting broke out, she said security was unable to intervene to stop the violence because crowds formed tight circles around the brawlers.

Nicola said “a few people” were evacuated by security towards the end of the concert and she did not know if anyone was seriously injured.

Chaos extended beyond the walls of Mount Eden as loud music traveled across Auckland, shaking the homes of those who lived nearby.

Residents took to social media to report feeling like they were “in an earthquake” and seeing objects falling from walls.

Last night’s concert was Scott’s first time performing in New Zealand following its infamous 2016 cancellation.

The rapper previously hosted his own music event called Astroworld Festival, which he launched in 2018 in his hometown of Houston. He headlined the 2021 festival, which brought together 50,000 spectators. when a crowd crush left 10 dead and hundreds more injured.

Police, Eden Park and Auckland Council have been contacted for comment.
