Audacity 3.7 fixes bugs and improves compatibility with Linux

Music creators, podcast producers, and amateur audio enthusiasts will be happy to know that a new version of Audacity has been released – and it fixes many bugs.

Audacity 3.7.0 marks a new series of maintenance releases that will fix defects, fix bugs, and eliminate issues from current editions.

There are some big new features in the works for Audacity 4.0, but as the Audacity 3.6 The series from earlier this year was not without its problems, a little breathing space to focus on the timely release of repair builds, for the benefit of users now, seems like a wise approach.

Audacity 3.7.0

As an Ubuntu blog, mention of improved Linux compatibility in the Audacity 3.7.0 release notes caught my eye.

Changes fix quirks in the official Audacity AppImage, like version 3.6.4, crashes when closed if Preferences had been used, the AppImage did not work on Arch, and some backend adjustments were made to ensure the app built correctly for Linux.

Additionally, this version of Audacity would offer Faster boot times on systems with multiple audio devicesand pasting clips with the “Edit clips can move other clips” option enabled no longer bypasses clips located on other tracks.

Fewer bug fixes and more of a minor fix, Audacity 3.7.0 now lets you “undo” adding, removing, replacing, and rearranging audio effectswhich is practical.

In addition to the above, other changes in Audacity 3.7.0 include:

  • Improved contrast in light theme.
  • Export MP3 renames ‘Mad’ setting on ‘Excessive’
  • ‘Share cut/delete’ renowned “Cut/delete and leave a space”
  • Better handling of non-standard characters when saving to the cloud
  • Importing Opus files using libopus no longer moves audio data
  • Database compaction made more reliable
  • Fix VST preset path set for macOS

Resolved crashes include a crash caused by closing a project after turning a real-time effects stack on and off, and another triggered by canceling an operation on a stereo track halfway through.

More details on fixes, plus links to bug reports are on Audacity GitHub.

Get Audacity 3.7.0

As always, you can visit the the Audacity website to download the latest version for Windows, macOS or Linux.

The Linux version comes as AppImage, which is a standalone all-in-one application bundle that works on all Linux distributions. But for use AppImages on Ubuntu you need to install a library from the Ubuntu repositories first – so be aware of that.

Alternatively, there is an unofficial download of Audacity on Flathuband although there is an unofficial Bold move it has not been updated since 2022.
