Grand Junction freezes for the first time this season Thursday morning

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The first frost of the season is likely in Grand Junction Thursday morning. Other areas, including areas around Montrose and Nucla, could see the first severe frost of the season. The growing season ends with that first hard frost.

Freeze warning

A Freeze Warning is in effect overnight Wednesday through Thursday morning, from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Low temperatures will range from near 30 degrees around Grand Junction to low to average temperatures across much of the Western Slope. Colder areas, including the Four Corners, could cool into the teens in the morning. In most areas, this frost will end the growing season. At the very least, damage to unprotected outdoor plants and crops is likely.

Lingering snow in the mountains ends tonight

The patchy snow this afternoon on our neighboring mountains is over. Snow is still scattered on the mountains this evening. The snow will gradually fade and stop between 10 p.m. and midnight. Clouds will clear and dissipate quickly in most areas overnight. Clearing – leaving clouds without warming cloud cover – will allow temperatures to drop quickly. We will freeze pretty easily across most of western Colorado this evening.

Candy or Treat Forecast

The weather seems perfect for trick-or-treating on Halloween night. We will cool from the low to mid 50s from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to the upper 30s and lower 40s to 8 p.m. under mostly clear skies. It’s cold enough to put a warm layer or two under the suits.

Our next 24 hours

This evening it will be partly cloudy to mostly clear. We’ll go from the low to mid 40s at 6 p.m. to the upper 30s and lower 40s at 8 p.m., then into the mid 30s at 10 p.m. The rest of the night will be mostly clear and colder. A Freeze Warning is in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. overnight and Thursday morning. Low temperatures will be near 30 degrees around Grand Junction, 23 degrees around Montrose, 27 degrees around Delta, 19 degrees around Cortez and 30 degrees around Moab. Halloween will be mostly sunny with some clouds during the day. We will warm from the 20s and 30s at 7 a.m. to the 40s at noon, then into the 50s at 3 p.m. High temperatures will be near 54 degrees around Grand Junction, 50 degrees around Montrose, 53 degrees around Delta, 54 degrees around Cortez and 58 degrees around Moab.

Rain and snow in the mountains arrive on Sunday

Our next weather maker is looking more and more like a bigger deal than we initially thought. It’s on track to arrive Sunday with rain in the western Colorado valleys and snow in the mountains. Sunday evening and Monday morning could be cold enough for rain in the valleys to turn to snow. We may be just cold enough for snow to fall, but just warm enough for snow to melt instead of pile up. It’s a difficult and borderline situation. We will monitor the progress of this developing storm system for you between now and then. Be sure to stay updated with new information as we get closer to Sunday.
