Hancock Park District acquires Cooper Pond, Oakwoods Preserve for expansion

HANCOCK Co., Ohio (WTVG) – The Hancock Park District acquired Cooper Pond in late September as a donation. They will spend the next year restoring the area before opening it to the public.

Cooper Pond was privately owned prior to its acquisition by the district, according to Hancock Park District Manager Gary Pruitt. He says this was not properly taken care of.

“Everything was left behind,” Pruitt said. “We have a shed full of all kinds of materials: some can be reused, others need to be disposed of. Some buildings and structures need to be demolished.

Other renovations include removing invasive plants and fallen trees. Pruitt said it is possible to have a paved, accessible path around the pond.

The goal is to open Cooper Pond to the public in fall 2025.
