Agatha Always Had One More Shocking Death (And It’s Bigger Than You Think)

We’ve finally reached the end of The Witch’s Trail, but there was one more loss for the coven at the end. Wednesday night’s two-episode finale Agathe throughout was filled with revelations about the Road, the witches within it, and even what might be next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all of these revelations came at a price: one more witch met her end and this time it could have major implications. move forward. Warning: spoilers for the finale of Agathe throughout beyond this point. Only keep reading if you really want to know.

In the end, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) did not survive the adventure undertaken in the series, the seemingly invincible and scheming witch being ultimately eliminated. However, it wasn’t the Road that killed Agatha, or a botched trial, or anything like that, really. Instead, Agatha willingly went to her death – and it turns out the legendary witch’s end is just the beginning of the story. Picking up after last week’s trial which saw Lilia (Patti LuPone) sacrifice herself to end the Salem SevenAgatha hits the road again and comes face to face with Rio (Aubrey Plaza), aka Death. It turns out that all along, Agatha has been distracting Rio from Death’s true target: Billy (Joe Locke). It turns out that, according to Rio, Billy is an abomination who has disrupted the “sacred balance” taking a second life and she must stop him from doing the same to Tommy. See, it turns out that Tommy hasn’t been born again yet and Billy’s mission to find his brother is a problem. Agatha ends up making a deal with Rio: since Rio cannot kill Billy because he has just been reincarnated, he must voluntarily surrender himself to Death. Agatha says she will have it done, but only if Rio stops chasing her. Rio agrees.

Agatha, Billy and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) continue down the road towards the final trial which sees Jen realize that Agatha was the witch who bound her and thus, Jen unbinds herself. But Agatha tells Billy about Tommy and that he needs a body to enter and, during the final trial, Agatha guides Billy in finding a vessel for Tommy, forcing Billy to “finish” his trial and to disappear. Agatha also ends up finishing her trial but she finds herself facing Death who is not happy that Billy was not delivered to her. A fight ensues, Billy appears – fully in his power – and helps Agatha by giving her some of his power. Agatha then appears to turn on Billy again, revealing her deal with Rio, but when Billy mentally reaches out to Agatha to ask if this is how her own son died, Agatha does something unexpected: she kisses Rio and it’s literally a kiss of death. Agatha dies, sacrificing herself for Billy.

But the story doesn’t end there. The final episode reveals that Billy realizes that he created The Witches Road and that this realization comes with a surprise visitor: Agatha, as a ghost. Agatha reveals that before Billy, the Road was actually just a myth, a lie, a scam created centuries ago to kill witches and take their power. When Billy fully understands that his manifestation of the Road means that he has killed Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, he finds himself enraged and sets out to banish Agatha. It stops, however, when Agatha’s ghost reveals why she doesn’t want to just pass into the afterlife: she doesn’t want to face her son. This leads to a tender moment between Billy and Agatha, with Billy saying he thinks Nicholas will forgive him, but ultimately, Agatha suggests that she and Billy would make a good team, with Agatha serving as a mentor of sorts to Billy. The episode – and the series – ends with Billy closing the road and Agatha announces “Let’s go find Tommy” as the two set off into the world together.

This is of course a major development, not only because Agatha dies, but also because Agatha (as a ghost) teams up with Billy, which opens up the possibility for Marvel to research Tommy, to create the Young Avengers or even take an adaptation of The Children’s Crusade. This also allows Agatha to be more in line with her comic book counterpart in that she is now able to train Billy with her magic – in the comics, Agatha trained Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the art magic. With Agatha, to some extent, redeemed, the possibilities are somewhat endless as to where the MCU can go with the character and it will be interesting to see unfold.
