In the Philippines, the death toll from typhoons Trami and Kong-rey rose to 139, authorities said Wednesday, October 31.

After battering the Philippines, the Kong-rey has now moved towards Taiwan and is also expected to make landfall in China on Friday.

In the Philippines, around 115 people have been injured and 37 remain missing across the country since the storms began, according to the Anadolu news agency.

Typhoon Trami, which made landfall in the Philippines last week, has affected more than 7 million people and more than 300,000 of them are still in evacuation centers, according to the news agency.

About 111,000 homes were damaged across the Philippines due to heavy rains and flooding caused by storms that hit the country, the agency said.

Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan on Thursday afternoon and is expected to be the most powerful storm to hit the island in recent decades, with winds reaching speeds of 200 km per house expected to hit the autonomous island, according to The New York Times.

As a precaution, authorities on the self-governing island closed schools, offices and financial markets, evacuated more than 8,000 people and mobilized the military for rescue and relief, according to the Times.

All of Taiwan is under warnings and advisories have been issued for heavy rain and other extreme weather events.

The storm is also expected to make landfall in China on Friday and heavy rain is expected to hit several cities, including the financial hub of Shanghai, according to the Times.
