The 2024 season was disappointing for West Virginiabut they still have an opportunity to do well and end the season on a good note with a relatively easier schedule in November. The big question, of course, is the status of quarterback Garrett Greene and whether he will be able to return to action, and if so, when.

Since it’s the bye week, I thought we could get a look at the big picture here with the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI). Below is the current percentage chance the FPI Game Predictor gives West Virginia to win each game remaining on its schedule.

I’ll be honest: this one is a tough matchup to read for many different reasons. West Virginia has been through a tough schedule and could once again find itself without its starting quarterback.

Cincinnati, on the other hand, comes into this game a surprising 5-3, but they have yet to face a single ranked team. They beat Towson, Miami (OH), Arizona State with a backup quarterback, as well as UCF and Houston, who are a combined 3-7 in the Big 12.

Because it’s on the road, I can understand why the computers favor the Bearcats, but I think it’s much closer to 50/50.

And the bears? After a disappointing 2-4 start to the season, Baylor has won two in a row and looks like a completely different beast. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson is building teams right now, and you know he must be licking his lips seeing this defensive secondary on his next schedule.

Again, I understand why the computers here lean toward West Virginia, but to me it’s pure gambling.

Only 53.6%? Yeah. I expected it to be north of 60. The Knights have lost five games in a row, and while they’re favored to win this week against Arizona, they can certainly drop out before heading to Arizona State .

What am I saying here? Well, there’s a good chance UCF enters this road trip to Morgantown on a seven-game losing streak. For a team that thought it was poised to win the Big 12 title this year, losing seven straight and being ineligible for a bowl, I wonder about the level of enthusiasm with which they will come to West Virginia in late November.

That’s a bit generous, don’t you think? The Red Raiders have a high-flying offense that poses a lot of problems for this shaken West Virginia defense.

Behren Morton has a 17/3 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and Tahj Brooks is still one of the best running backs in the conference, closing in on 1,000 yards this season.

Texas Tech has had Neal Brown’s number regardless of coach, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Mountaineers fall in the season finale.
