Walmart Workers Show How Gursimran Kaur’s Death ‘Makes No Sense’: ‘The Oven Is Designed Not To Accidentally Shut Off’

The recent death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee Gursimran Kaur left the community of Halifax, Nova Scotia devastated and demanding answers. Kaur was found dead in a walk-in oven at a Walmart store, raising many questions about workplace safety. Since the tragedy, Walmart employees have expressed concerns about the likelihood of accidental entrapment, highlighting key design features of the oven that should have prevented such an incident.

Questions raised regarding safety design of walk-in oven

Co-workers familiar with the store’s equipment wonder how Kaur got stuck inside the oven. TikTok user ChrisBreezie559a Walmart employee, explained that the oven door is difficult to close unintentionally due to the safety mechanisms. Breezie explained that the oven includes an emergency latch that allows people inside to easily open it, making it unlikely that someone could be accidentally locked in it. “You have to push (the latch) with all your might, pull the handle to the side and lock.” in place,” Breezie said, noting that operating the oven would not require an employee to be inside.

Another employee named Mary reinforced Breezie’s concerns in her own videoshowcasing other details of the oven design. According to Mary, the controls to operate the oven are located outside, inaccessible to anyone inside, making it impossible to light the oven from the inside. “This door doesn’t close by itself… It’s designed not to do that. You have to push it, hear the click,” Mary said, also noting the presence of an emergency latch that would release the door if it was activated and this for the oven to be turned on, you would have to press the buttons located on the outside.

One commenter mentioned seeing several Walmart walk-in oven videos, each showing different models, to which ChrisBreezie responded, “Yes they are (different) but similar in many ways, no oven will lock without latch”. or pressure, it will not lock accidentally, under any circumstances, nor how…”
