Stampeders kicker René Paredes confirms he will play next year

Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes usually takes time off-season to decide if he wants to return for another season – but not this time.

Paredes has made his decision, he is coming back for another year. For Stampeders fans, that’s a good thing, as Paredes has been a model of consistency throughout his career.

The 39-year-old has made just over 93 percent of field goals this season. He reached 41 out of 44 and says he still feels good.

“I had a great year,” Paredes said.

“I’m still pretty upset about the two positions I’ve had this year. I think I hit four this year, which is crazy. Two were extra points and I wish I could have gotten them back because I could have gone 100 percent this year.

“My body feels pretty good right now, so I’m pretty happy with that too, so I’m going into the offseason healthy.”

Stamps in decline

Although this year has been good for Paredes, the same cannot be said for the team. The Stamps finished the year with a 5-11-1 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Paredes has been here for good and bad, and he says the Stamps have been in decline for five years.

“We haven’t won a playoff game since 2018,” he said.

“We haven’t played a home playoff game since 2018, and the last two years we barely made the playoffs, and this year we didn’t, so it’s tough for me to say, but we are in decline as an organization.”

When you don’t win, changes will be made and the first of them came Wednesday.

Assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Mark Kilam, defensive coordinator Brent Monson and defensive line coach Juwan Simpson were all let go.

Paredes knows there will be other changes.

“When you go to 5-12 (5-11-1) or whatever we are, things are going to change. It’s not up to me, but I love this city and I love this organization and I hope something good comes out of it,” he said.
