Girl in hospital after being hit by Mississauga bus: police

An 11-year-old girl is in hospital after being struck by a bus in Mississauga Thursday afternoon, police said.

Peel Regional Police received a call at 2:30 p.m. that a girl had been struck by a MiWay bus in front of Lisgar Middle School, Const. » Tyler Bell said in front of the school Thursday.

The girl was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition, Bell said. He said her condition is now stable and she has been transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Bell said it was too early in the investigation to provide many details about what happened, but said the bus was traveling southbound on Lisgar Drive at the time the school was letting out when the young girl crossed in front. Bell said police believed there was heavy traffic in the area at the time.

“There is no information to support the notion that the city bus driver’s driving behavior was out of the norm,” Bell added.

The driver and the bus remained on site, he said.

Lisgar Drive, across from the college, is closed between Beacham and Dillingwood drives, Bell said.

A spokesperson for the City of Mississauga, which operates MiWay, said in an email that the transit agency is cooperating with Peel Regional Police’s investigation into the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the pedestrians and their families during this difficult time,” spokesperson Irene McCutcheon said in the email.
