Fall garden cleanup means leaves and yard waste piled up at Olmsted County composting site

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Dozens of people stopped at the Olmsted County composting site Friday to dispose of fallen leaves and yard waste.

The mountains of brown leaves will be transformed into compost in two to three months. Rochester city ordinance prohibits residents from leaving leaves on city streets.

Anthony Wittmer, communications specialist for the Olmsted County Department of Environmental Resources, said residents can dispose of the leaves at the site. They can also get rid of their pumpkins, but they have to remove the candles. They must not bring tree branches onto the site.

“Take the bags with you, we don’t want that in the compost, no branches, no sticks,” he said. “If you’re bringing pumpkins to the site, make sure you take the candles, the tea lights or the little electric candles, you know, take them out of the pumpkins, because obviously we don’t want that in the finish. compost.”

Thousands of people visit the site from the start of leaf fall until mid-November, according to Wittmer. He added that it is also against Minnesota state law to throw the leaves in the trash.
