Doug Creamer: Time flies

If Congress decides to maintain Daylight Saving Time, I would support that decision. I am not in favor of turning back the clock to the fall. I like to keep it light as late as possible. Part of the reason is that I walk around late at night, especially in the summer months. Often, when I return from my walk in winter, it is dark.

The fall colors were beautiful as I walked today. There was a little pinch in the air. We were very lucky with good weather this fall. I think spring and fall are my favorite times of year because the days are warm and the nights are cool. I was thinking as I walked today how quickly time flies. The holiday season is almost here and before we know it, another year will be over.

The other day I heard a commercial on television that proclaimed that as we age, time becomes a more precious commodity. Naturally, the company wanted the consumer to spend their time and money on their products. Their argument is true. Our time here is limited and we must make conscious choices about how we use this scarce resource. We all have a certain amount of time, and how we use or waste it will affect how we think about it when we’re older.

We all spend time working when we are young. We earn money to pay for food, clothing and shelter. I was a teacher and spent many more hours than the school day doing my job. I spent many hours working, but I learned late in my career to better balance my work and personal time. I don’t know any retiree who would have liked to work more hours during their career.

I am partially retired and enjoying the extra time I have. I recently read in Genesis that some of the first humans lived for several hundred years. God has decided to shorten our lifespan. I also read that when Caleb was 85 years old, he was a valiant warrior fighting for his territory in the Promised Land. Joshua lived to be 110 years old. Regardless of our health and God’s many blessings, we all have a limited time here.

Life tends to get very busy in the limited time we are given. I find that time flies during the holiday season. There are too many places to go and too many things to do. In recent years, I have made a conscious choice to be present in the special moments when I spend time with family and friends. I have a deep desire to connect with those I love and create memories that will last a lifetime. I want to invest my time in my family and friends.

Since we know that time flies, we should be motivated to connect with God. His invitation to spend eternity with Him must be accepted before leaving this world. It is our decision and He wants us to choose Him. After choosing Him, we must invest time in prayer, reading His Word, and talking with Him. It is the most valuable investment of our time. This will pay us dividends for eternity.

The boundaries of time will not exist in eternity, but they do exist here. If you have accepted your gift of salvation and your reservation in heaven, then I want to remind you of the importance of extending this invitation to your family and friends. We don’t want them to miss out on an eternity with God because they didn’t make the most important decision of their life. God wants a relationship with every person, but he leaves that choice to us. This is why I think it is essential that we take the time to share our faith, our story with those who do not know God so that they can develop a relationship with Him.

I want to encourage you to use the limited time you have to invite your family and friends into a relationship with God. The Bible makes it clear that time will be running out and this decision must be made before the end of time or before the end of our individual time. I think it is also important that we pray for those who do not have this relationship so that their hearts will be tender and open to God so that they can accept His invitation. Time passes and we don’t want time to pass for anyone.
