One of the main goals of mine action efforts within the Department of Defense is equal and inclusive access to relevant jobs, including increasingly involving women, veterans, mine-affected people and people with disabilities.

This topic was discussed at the seminar “Equal Opportunities: Involving People with Disabilities in Employment in Mine Action”, which was held in kyiv with the financial support of the Swedish government.

“Today, much attention is paid to the implementation of policies ensuring equal access to work in the field of mine action, to the creation of specialized training programs that would include both the skills technical and non-technical requirements in this area, and the creation of conditions guaranteeing practical conditions and safe employment”, said the head of the mine countermeasures department, Colonel Oleh Shuvarskyi.

The UN is implementing an employment program for people with disabilities, including veterans, in Ukraine. As part of this project, the first four Ukrainians injured by mines found employment at HALO Trust.

As the ministry indicated, they will analyze images from satellites and drones to study and map the territory contaminated by mines. Ukrainians got a job offer a month after completing the corresponding training for people with disabilities.

In addition, seminar participants were introduced to HR approaches regarding persons with disabilities in mine action operations and attended practical courses.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, at the Ukrainian Mine Action Conference 2024 (UMAC-2024), partner countries announced additional commitments to support humanitarian demining to the tune of almost $70 million.
