Massachusetts Weather: Temperatures will drop below 30 degrees overnight

You may have delayed taking off your winter coat because of Halloween at 70 degrees. But this first weekend of November is officially the time to do it.

Temperatures are expected to drop in Massachusetts “seasonally” this weekend starting Nov. 2, National Weather Service forecasters predicted.

Across the state, clouds were expected Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 50s, more than 20 degrees cooler than previous days, forecasters said.

Cold air will move in Saturday evening “in a sharp contrast to the previous 24 hours,” with temperatures falling into the upper 20s and low 30s, forecasters said.

Clear skies and light winds will persist through the day Sunday, and temperatures will remain just below normal in the upper 40s and mid 50s.

Those temperatures will stay mostly the same overnight as clouds roll in, forecasters said. This will give way to a cloudy Monday in the 50s.

However, Tuesday and Wednesday could take a warmer turn, as temperatures reach the mid 60s and low 70s.

A new cold front is expected Thursday, but temperatures are expected to remain a little above average.

Fire weather

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning Friday that continued Saturday for the entire state due to “critical fire conditions.”

The “prolonged period of dry weather coupled with very dry ground” continued to cause concerns about fires this weekend, forecasters said.

There were 113 separate wildfires in the last week alone, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office. That includes 10 fires reported in the past 24 hours, he said.

“A strong wind yesterday (Friday) brought a lot more leaves, including oak leaves, which set that dry fuel on fire,” Wark told MassLive Saturday morning, referring to The ongoing bushfire in Northampton.

“Put a little more wind behind it, and it’ll just reignite the fire,” he said. The Northampton fire doubled in size overnight, officials said, as 50 firefighters were on the scene again Saturday morning to battle the blaze.

Central and western Massachusetts had “several significant fires” reported late Friday night into Saturday morning, although ongoing fires are spreading statewide, Wark said.

The flames were previously concentrated in the eastern part of the state.

At a rate of 1,200%, with around 200 fires in OctoberThere have been a much larger number of fires than the average of 15 per month usually seen in the commonwealth, the state fire marshal’s office said in a statement Friday.
