British Columbia highways will see more snow Monday, ECCC says

Another winter storm is expected to hit British Columbia’s southern passes on Monday, prompting a new round of advisories from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The weather agency issued a special weather statement Saturday afternoon covering the Coquihalla Highway, the Okanagan Connector and Highway 3’s Allison and Kootenay Passes.

The release warns that “strong gusty winds, rapid accumulation of snow and blowing snow with poor visibility” are all possible.

Most of the snow is expected to fall all day Monday and into the night, with strong winds persisting into Tuesday, according to ECCC.

“Snow accumulations on the highest peaks like Coquihalla and Kootenay Pass could exceed 20 centimeters on Monday,” the federal agency said.

“Check your BC Traveler Forecast for details of each itinerary as this weather event evolves.”

The snowfall forecast for Monday follows another storm that brought snow to the passes Friday and Saturday.

When Saturday’s special weather statement was issued, a snowfall warning was still in effect for Kootenay Pass.

“Mountain weather conditions can change suddenly, leading to dangerous driving conditions,” Environment Canada said.

Winter tires have been mandatory on British Columbia highways since October 1.
