UFC Edmonton results: Erin Blanchfield defeats Rose Namajunas

Namajunas (13-6 MMA) will enter the contest on a two-fight winning streak, his last being a lopsided unanimous decision win over Tracy Cortes in July. “Thug” went 3-2 in his last five years Octagon appearances overall.

Meanwhile, Erin Blanchfield (12-2 MMA) was last seen in action last March, where she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Manon Fiorot. The setback ended a nine-fight winning streak for “Cold Blooded,” who appeared to be on the verge of winning the title before the loss.

The first round of the UFC Edmonton co-main event begins and Rose Namajunas quickly comes out and takes the center of the cage. Erin Blanchfield turns to her right. “Thug” stings her with a jab. She lands another one as Erin attempts a counter hook. Blanchfield misses with a high kick. Rose lands a nice low kick. She lands another one but eats a returning low kick from Blanchfield. Both ladies seem happy to keep the fight going at first. Erin misses with a high kick. Rose does the same with a low kick attempt. “Cold Blooded” with a 1-2. Rose Namajunas responds with a low kick. Erin Blanchfield goes to the body with a straight right. Namajunas counters with a nice punch off the top. Rose with three straight lefts. Blanchfield with a 1-2 then a knee to the body. She comes forward with a high kick then a good right. She starts turning up the volume late in the round. The horn sounds to end the first frame.

Round two of the UFC Edmonton co-main event begins and Rose Namajunas comes out with her jab. The fighters exchange good punches in the pocket. ‘Thug’ with a clean left jab. Blanchfield charges forward with a burst, but nothing that bears any relation to any real power. Erin connects with a good straight. Rose lands a big left hook. Blanchfield forces the clinch and pushes Namajunas against the cage. Rose lands a reverse throw and ends up on top. She chooses to get up and we resume the strike. “Thug” with a sharp right hand to the middle. She moves towards the body with a pair of hooks. She is definitely the most technical attacker in this one. Still, Blanchfield continues to move forward with punches of his own. She delivers a front kick to the body of Rose then charges in with a 1-2. She pushes Namajunas against the fence and the horn sounds to end the second round.

Round three of the UFC Edmonton co-main event begins and Erin Blanchfield attacks with an opening flurry of punches. Rose Namajunas calmly walks away and walks around. Blanchfield with another flurry then a low kick. Rose with left hand. Erin with a body kick. Namajunas looks for a single leg takedown, but it’s not there. Blanchfield forces the clinch and backs Rose against the cage. She marks a withdrawal. Rose tries to sweep, but “Cold Blooded” manages to stay on top. Erin Blanchfield now works in half guard. No real offense yet. Erin is finally working in two good hands. Rose Namajunas returns to full guard and we’ll head into the fourth round.

Round four of the UFC Edmonton co-headliner begins and “Thug Rose” looks to keep Erin Blanchfield at bay from the start. She pumps her jab and uses good footwork to do so. “Cold Blooded” finally cuts Rose off and forces the clinch. She looks for a takedown, but Namajunas avoids and circles around. Both ladies now have good moves up their sleeves. Rose Namajunas with a sneaky left hook that finds the mark. She lands another one as Erin swings and misses with a right. Blanchfield changes levels and sinks into a double leg takedown attempt. Somehow, Rose avoids being shot and is able to return to range. Blanchfield with a right hand. Rose with a left. Erin tries two more punches before the horn, but neither finds a home.

The fifth and final round of the UFC Edmonton co-main event begins and Erin Blanchfield comes through with a flurry of big shots. Rose Namajunas dives during a single leg takedown attempt but is unable to complete the takedown. ‘Cold Blooded’ goes for a double leg takedown attempt and this time she succeeds. She goes into full mount, but Rose quickly returns to half guard. Blanchfield goes to side control and looks for a crucifix. She locks it and Rose Namajunas is now in all kinds of trouble. Rose escapes and eventually gets up. Erin Blanchfield still holds her and lands a few knees in the middle. More clinch work from “Cold Blooded” to close out the fight.
