Recent rains not enough to cure Alabama drought, fire hazard advisory in effect

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – The entire state of Alabama remains in the grip of drought and under a fire hazard advisory, despite some recent rainfall.

Much of our state is experiencing “moderate” drought, while some areas are experiencing more “severe” conditions.

This is an overview of current drought monitoring.

Keep in mind this is before the rain in the last hours of October, which helped a little.

Before the rain, this October was going to be one of the driest on record for the city of Birmingham.

However, this was not enough to end the drought.

In fact, it’s still the driest October on record in Anniston.

Currently, all 67 counties fall under the Alabama Forestry Commission’s Fire Danger Advisory.

The commission said that in 30 days, 246 wildfires burned about 3,000 acres.

The state has not issued a burning ban, but it strongly discourages any outdoor burning until the weather improves.
