Blackpool should follow in Manchester’s footsteps by building an indoor concert arena, according to one of the city’s MPs.

Blackpool South MP Chris Webb said he supported the idea after it received support from many residents on social media following the collapse of plans for a 300-room leisure complex million pounds on the Central Station site.

Previous visions for the site – including building a super-casino – also failed.

However, buildings, including old police station And district court remain on track for demolition, meaning the site will soon be completely emptied.

A 1,306-space multi-storey car park opened on the land in May this year.

Mr Webb spoke in the House of Commons about the uncertainty surrounding developing economic issues and said he also hoped to speak with Culture, Media and Sport Minister Lisa Nandy.

He told the Local democracy information service: “There is a lot of pressure from residents who would like to see a state-of-the-art arena built in Blackpool, and I want to explore how the government could work with the private sector.

“We’ve seen how transformative the Co-op Arena has been in Manchester and everyone I’ve spoken to has talked about the idea of ​​having an indoor arena in Blackpool.

“It would be something on this site that wouldn’t compete with other tourism offerings, there’s already parking there and road links directly from Yeadon Way.

“However, this will require some public investment and I am looking into how the Co-op Arena was financed.”

Mr Webb said that despite competition from existing large arenas in Manchester and Liverpool, he believed there would be demand for such a development in Blackpool.

He said: “Blackpool has shown itself to attract massive attendance for the big events held here and if you look across the area down to the lakes there is no venue like it.

“It could host events such as concerts, comedy and sports and we need something like that for our tourism.”
