Five teams remain undefeated after chaotic end to Week 10 (Video)

What if I told you that Miami and SMU were tied for the top spot in the ACC standings? Or that BYU was alone in leading the Big 12? And how about this nugget: Five SEC teams have one league loss at the top of the conference.

Saturday was wild. Five ranked teams lost to unranked opponents: No. 10 Texas A&M (South Carolina), No. 11 Iowa State (Texas Tech), No. 11 Clemson (Louisville), No. 17 K-State (Houston) And No. 24 Illinois (Minnesota). Three undefeated fell, including Penn State (Ohio State).

The upsets left us with a wacky and unexpected power conference ranking. With A&M’s loss, the SEC no longer has an undefeated team in the league, and the Big 12 has only one undefeated team (BYU). In the ACC, the Hurricanes and Mustangs just need to win to meet in the ACC Championship Game (neither plays a ranked team the rest of the game and they don’t not confront). As for the Big Ten, they are Oregon (expected) and Indiana (unexpected).

The Cyclones, Nittany Lions and Panthers all fell from the ranks undefeated, leaving five perfect teams in the FBS: Oregon, Miami, BYU, Army (yes, Army) and Indiana (yes, Indiana).

And what about the Group of Five? Louisiana (Sun Belt), Boise State (Mountain West) and Tulane (American) all won weekday games to stay in the race for the CFP G5 spot. On Saturday, Army joined them, keeping its dream season alive with a victory over Air Force to improve to 8-0. But Navy and Memphis likely catapulted themselves out of CFP competition with upset losses to Rice and UTSA, respectively.

But enough of this talk. Let’s move on to the Top 10!

This week: beat Michigan 38-17

Next week: against Maryland

You had a good day offensively when your quarterback throws for 294 yards, your running back runs for 117 and your receiver catches 149 yards passing. That’s what the Ducks had against a talented Michigan defense. Oregon improved as the season went on. Dan Lanning’s team currently appears to be the most complete in football.

This week: beat Florida 34-20

Next week: at Ole Miss

Even with a third-string quarterback, the Gators exposed the Bulldogs. This is worrying. Quarterback Carson Beck threw three interceptions and Georgia needed a late interception to seal things. The match was tied with five minutes remaining! However, Kirby Smart’s group has some of the best victories of the year (against Clemson, Texas). And another quality victory opportunity presents itself next week in Oxford.

This week: beat Penn State 20-13

Next week: vs. Purdue

Thanks to an outstanding defensive performance – including a goal-line stand – Ryan Day and the Buckeyes passed the Beaver Stadium test (again). Quarterback Will Howard got redemption against his original team Also. It wasn’t pretty, but Howard “willed” Ohio State to have a big win, he said. Day’s group fell short in its first top-five road game of the season last month (at Oregon). This was not the case on Saturday.

This week: beat Duke 53-31

Next week: at Georgia Tech

The Blue Devils and former Miami coach Manny Diaz went to the Hard Rock and led 28-17 midway through the third quarter. And then the hurricanes exploded in a big way. They outscored Duke 36-3 in the next quarter and a half, led by quarterback Cam Ward, who hit receivers for touchdowns of 66 and 49 yards.

This week: Beat Michigan State 47-10

Next week: against Michigan

The ninth act of The Curt Cignetti Show included the Hoosiers’ first deficit of the season. Have no fear. Trailing 10-0, quarterback Kurtis Rourke and Co. finished the game on a 47-0 run. It was the seventh time in nine games that Indiana – now 9-0 – eclipsed the 40-point mark. Cignetti’s team will face its two toughest defensive tests over the next two weeks: a home game against Michigan and a road matchup at Ohio State.

This week: lost to Ohio State 20-13

Next week: against Washington

An 11th straight loss to an AP top five team doesn’t keep the Nittany Lions out of the top 10. In fact, by facing the Buckeyes, they may have proven they are playoff caliber. However, there are problems. Like, for example, offensive weapons on the outside who aren’t named Tyler Warren. James Franklin needs to find more options for his QB as the season progresses.

This week: Goodbye

Next week: at Utah

The holy war is looming. But this battle isn’t shaping up to be the top-25 showdown projected by many earlier this season. The Utes enter the game on a four-game losing streak, but nothing like a good rivalry game to liven them up. How good would it be for Utah to be the team to take BYU’s unbeaten streak? The Cougars have played with fire a bit this season, including in a game against Oklahoma State.

This week: Goodbye

Next week: vs. Florida State

Nothing to see here. Just the Irish, in excellent position to capture an at-large berth in the expanded playoffs. Notre Dame has four games remaining and only one of them, Army, is ranked. Get ready: An 11-1 Notre Dame team earns an at-large playoff berth and maybe even hosts a game as a No. 5-8 seed. Remember, in the 12-team format, the Irish cannot secure a top-four seed or a first-round bye. These are only reserved for conference champions.

This week: Goodbye

Next week: against Florida

The Longhorns reappear in our top 10 after this Saturday’s shuffle. Are they among the top 10? Texas’ best win might be at Vanderbilt. But they have plenty of opportunities ahead, including this late-season tangle with the Aggies. First up, a home game against a Gators team that’s playing better.

This week: beat Pitt 48-25

Next week: goodbye

Surprised? Don’t be. The Mustangs picked up wins at Louisville, Duke and just bombed the previously undefeated Panthers. They are real. Their only loss was a three-point home loss to our No. 7 team, BYU. Rhett Lashlee’s team edged out Boise State for our final spot in the top 10. We love the Broncos too! It was close.

Abandoned : Clemson (6), Texas A&M (10)
