A protest breaks out outside a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ontario.

Peel Regional Police say they are aware of a protest that took place at a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ont., on Sunday.

Federal Minister Anita Anand posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she was “concerned by reports of unacceptable violent attacks at the Hindy Sabha Temple in Brampton.”

“All religions, including Hindus, have the right to attend places of worship and practice their religion without such attacks,” she wrote.

A video circulating on X appears to show people using flagpoles to hit others.

The Canadian Hindu Foundation says the “attack” “is taking place with the support of Khalistaani’s political supporters.”

Peel police said there was increased visibility in the area of ​​the Hindu Sabha Mandir in the northeast end of Brampton.

“While we respect the individual right to protest in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, our duty and responsibility remains to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all,” police said.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also published an article about the incident, calling it “completely unacceptable.”

“All Canadians should be free to practice their faith in peace,” Poilievre wrote.
