Three Hindus were arrested “without incident” on the grounds of a local temple in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, sparking an atmosphere of tension in the community as authorities failed to reveal the charges against them , officials said Monday.

The incident came as local residents had gathered to celebrate and pray at the temple.

“Details regarding the arrest are still emerging and authorities have not yet released the specific charges,” they said.

The police presence around the temple intensified as officers intervened to arrest the three young men, according to witnesses.

The identities of the arrested men have not yet been released, officials said.

What did the temple officials say?

A temple spokesperson expressed concerns about the detention and urged community members to be patient while awaiting further details about the incident.

“The community should remain patient while awaiting more information from authorities,” the spokesperson said.

Surrey RCMP said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation, but did not elaborate on the case.

“This incident comes at a time when community members are calling for harmony and unity, and many hope that the details will soon clarify the reasons for today’s detentions,” the officials said.

Local leaders also urged law enforcement to work transparently, saying it is necessary to build trust between police and the community.
