Victoria Derbyshire revealed that she had a miscarriage on a plane but still continued to work.

THE BBC The Newsnight presenter – who has since had sons Oliver, 20, and Joe, 17, with husband Mark Sandell – recalled the “very upsetting experience” and admitted it was “bizarre” how she felt “practical and pragmatic” at the time.

“We had a miscarriage first, it was very upsetting,” said the 56-year-old presenter said to Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast.

“I actually had a miscarriage on a plane; I was so practical and pragmatic that I was like, “Well, this is happening now and I’m going to work,” and I just kept going; It’s absolutely bizarre.

Victoria admitted her grief was “one thing” she struggled to talk about openly for a long time afterward.

“I’m a talker, I talk about everything. I’m very open – maybe that’s partly because of the way I was raised; we talked to my mom about all the shit that was going on,” she said.

“It’s something I haven’t been able to talk about for about five years; It was so strange that I couldn’t talk about it.

Her sons both know about her miscarriage and often wonder “fondly” what it would have been like to have a sister.

She added: “My boys know I had this miscarriage and they fondly think, ‘What if it had been a sister?’ » I know what we would have called her; they would have liked to have a sister.

Victoria admitted she didn’t give herself enough time to grieve after her miscarriage, but instead kept herself busy.

“I was happy to experience this pregnancy,” she added. “Happy to eat a lot of food and, you know, gain a lot of weight. I loved it, I loved it, yeah.

And being in her fifties hasn’t stopped Victoria – who had a mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 – I want another baby.

She said: ‘I feel like obviously I can’t now, I’m in my 50s and I haven’t had a period since chemotherapy, (but) I feel like I could have a baby now, isn’t that crazy?

“I love being a mom to a newborn.”
