Bystander shot, 2 men charged in fight on Corydon Avenue

Winnipeg police have charged two men in connection with a fight last month.

Police say the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 700 block of Corydon Avenue.

Investigators said two men got into a fight with a third man outside an establishment. A 44-year-old man was observing the altercation and intervened to help the third man, when the two suspects pulled out their handguns and shot the passerby.

Police said the man was shot in the upper body and taken to a hospital where he was stabilized and treated for his injuries.

The two suspects fled before police arrived.

The investigation also helped police connect one of the suspects to another gun incident that occurred on Smith Street earlier this year.

On Friday, police carried out a search warrant at homes in the first few blocks of Code Street and Monarch Mews. The two suspects were arrested.

During the search, police said they found approximately 18 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,800, packaging materials, counterfeit currency and identification, as well as approximately 5 000 dollars.

An 18-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault, intentional discharge of a restricted firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and three counts of non-compliance with the conditions of an engagement.

A 19-year-old man was charged with the same offenses, including driving with a suspended or disqualified license, possession of counterfeit money and forgery.

The two men were taken into custody.
