Ranking 134 college football teams after Week 10: The Boise State storyline you shouldn’t sleep on

Editor’s note: Athletics 134 is a weekly ranking of all FBS college football teams.

Ahead of first college football playoff rankings In the 12-team era, there is no shortage of questions about what the selection committee’s projected first bracket will look like. But a preconceived idea involving the Group of Five could be overturned by Boise State.

Power 4 conference champions are not guaranteed all four first-round byes, and the automatic Group of 5 bid reserved for the highest-ranked champion in those leagues is not guaranteed to be ranked 12th, even though most projections defaulted to that position. . A 12-1 Mountain West champion, Boise State, could land above 12 and could earn the No. 4 seed, depending on who wins the Big 12.

After a week in which many ranked teams fell, Boise State sits at No. 12 in this week’s edition of The Athletic 134. It’s not a No. 12 seed as the fifth champion of highest ranked conference. It’s No. 12 overall.

Boise State deserves a real look, and I’m curious what the committee will do. Historically, the committee has placed G5 teams lower in their rankings than in the polls, often because they have not had wins in the Top 25. But the The Broncos the situation is different. They have a 45-24 victory against a Washington State team ranked in both polls (and No. 21 here) and a victory against a UNLV team that receives votes. Boise State’s only loss was to Oregon on a field goal as time expired. This is the greatest loss of anyone in the country.

The Broncos are not only the Ashton Jeanty show. Teams have packed the box over the past two weeks to stop their Heisman Trophy candidate, but quarterback Maddux Madsen completed 24 of 32 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns against San Diego State. Boise State’s defense leads the nation in sacks per game.

If BYUthe last undefeated team in the Big 12, loses a game or doesn’t win the conference, Boise State could realistically finish ahead of the Big 12 champion and get what would likely be the No. 4 seed. Or at least it seems possible. We’ll see what the committee thinks on Tuesday.

Here is this week’s edition of The Athletic 134.

Mandel’s Final Thoughts: Amid big changes, Penn State’s loss to Ohio State remains the same

1-10

Ohio State wins at Penn State see him Buckeyes go to n°3, in front Miamibecause the Buckeyes’ best win is much better than the Canes’ and they were one game away from losing to No. 1 Oregon. The only top 40 team Miami has played is #22. Louisville.

Penn State slips to No. 8 with his loss. THE Nittany Lions and No. 7 Tennessee are separated by a very fine margin. The Vols have a much better victory (Alabama) and a much worse loss (Arkansas). Penn State played closely with U.S.C. And Wisconsinwhile Tennessee played closely with Florida, Oklahoma And Kentucky. In the end, I’m picking the best win, and it’s Tennessee by a hair.

11-25

EMS goes from n°19 to n°11 after a 45-28 demolition of Pitt it was only that close because of some trash time scores. The Mustangs are 8-1 with wins against currently ranked players Pitt and Louisville, and the only loss was a three-point loss to undefeated BYU while SMU was in the midst of a quarterback change. The Mustangs control their destiny until the ACC and CFP title game. Don’t sleep on it.

Texas A&M falls to 14th after a 44-20 loss to South Carolina but stay ahead LSU due to last week’s victory against the Tigersand LSU remains ahead of No. 16 Ole Mademoiselle due to their head-to-head result. An Ole Miss victory against Georgia this week could shake things up, while the winner of LSU-Alabama could see themselves advance to an at-large berth.

In the same way, Kansas State only falls to number 18 after his defeat against Houston due to his victory against Colorado. And Clemson is barely holding on to 25th place after his home loss against Louisville. The Tigers have dominated their opponents between their two multi-score losses to Georgia and Louisville, but there is no victory on ClemsonThe CV indicates that the amount should be higher.

Week 10 College Football Playoff Preview: 12 Big SEC Upsets and Trap Plays

No. 26 South Carolina has a weird CV. They beat Texas A&M and almost beat Alabama, but they also got blown out by Ole Miss and needed a late comeback to beat. Old Dominion. Army continues to inch closer to the top 25 after a victory against Aviation. They still haven’t led all season, but the Black Knights I have yet to face a team with a winning record. Their next two matches against North Texas And Notre Dame will change that.

Texas Technology rises to 31st after victory after being previously undefeated Iowa StateAnd Arizona State Getting to 6-2 also helps the Red Raiders with their win over the Sun Devils. Minnesota looks much improved and ranks 36th after beating Illinoisbut the Gophers stay behind Michigan due to the head-to-head result.

AP Top 25: Oregon is unanimously No. 1 before the first CFP ranking

51-75

Florida falls only to 51st after facing Georgia in the fourth quarter with a third-string quarterback, but injury to DJ Lagway does not bode well for the home stretch. USC falls to 57th after a fifth defeat by one scorethis time in Washington. There is no trophy for the “best 4-5 team”, but USC or Michigan State that’s probably it.

Houstonwhich was one of the lowest-ranked Power 4 teams at one point, ranks 64th after a comeback win over Kansas State. Willie Fritz does what he does, and a game of bocce isn’t out of the question. UConn is eligible to bowl after beating State of Georgia and could achieve eight or nine victories.
