A beautiful island is an alternative to the Maldives but with fewer tourists | Travel News | Journey

If you’re craving a summer getaway as the cold sets in, but don’t have a big budget, why not consider this beautiful island that offers a touch of luxury at half the price.

Con Dao Island in Vietnam has been compared to the Maldives in terms of beauty, but with fewer tourists.

Nestled off the southern coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is an archipelago made up of smaller islands with minimal commercial development, making it a quieter alternative.

The island is also home to a wild turtle sanctuary, so if you plan your vacation in August, you’ll be able to see these endangered hatchlings embark on their journey to the sea.

As for the ocean, Con Dao has breathtakingly long beaches with white sand and crystal clear waters, ideal for kayaking and snorkeling. There is even a magnificent reef to discover.

Much of the island is surrounded by Con Dao National Park.

Its thick jungle will give you plenty of opportunities to find your own piece of paradise. In addition to its stunning wildlife, Con Dao has a rich but dark history.

Once a penal colony, Con Dao housed soldiers who endured horrific conditions during the French colonial period and during the War of Resistance against America. If you want to delve deeper, you can visit the old prison, followed by the new museum housing over 2,000 photos and objects.

Con Son has four prison attractions, including an extensive cemetery. To visit them, make sure you have booked a ticket in advance.

Tickets for all four attractions can be purchased at Trai Phu Hai, located in the city center, for 40,000 dong (£1.20) per person.

These tickets provide access to all four attractions for one day only.

If you’re planning a summer getaway, the island experiences its warmest weather between June and August.

The months of September to January are traditionally slightly cooler, but still warmer than in the UK.

To reach the island, there are several daily flights from Saigon.
