Windows 11 24H2 bug takes File Explorer out of bounds, out of desktop

TL;DR: Windows 11 24H2 has been affected by an issue in File Explorer where the ellipsis menu appears off-screen in full-screen mode, making it inaccessible. This is another bug in a series of very strange bugs occurring across 24H2.

Windows 11 24H2 is proving to be a real bug fest, with some strange issues popping up, and here’s another one, this time in File Explorer.

Windows Latest reports that there is a serious problem in File Explorer with the three-dot (ellipsis) menu when using it in a full-screen window.

This is the button with three dots (also called meatballs) on the toolbar at the top of the File Explorer window, which, when clicked, calls up a drop-down menu below with additional options.

Except the bug makes this flyout appear above the toolbar, instead of below, and guess what the bad news is about that if File Explorer is opened in a full-size window ? Well, the ellipsis menu ends up at the top of the screen, so you can’t access those extra features (a few of which are network-related options).

Okay, so the fix is pretty simple, if clunky: change the window from full screen to a smaller size, stick it in the middle of the desktop, then you’ll be able to see the drop-down menu when it pops up. materializes above the window.

Still, it’s a bit complicated – and frankly, having a menu that manages to go out of bounds, at the top of the screen, in the first place, is a pretty poor show in terms of quality control on the team’s part Microsoft UI here.

Correction on entering

Microsoft told Windows Latest that it is aware of the issue and that a fix is coming in a future cumulative update. This probably isn’t the next update for Windows 11, as it’s only a week away and should arrive on November 12. With any luck, the solution should be integrated into the December update for Windows 11 24H2, as an interface. -holiday gift linked to those who took the plunge and updated around 24H2.

This shouldn’t happen in the final release of an operating system, and unfortunately, it’s not the only key to essential parts of the Windows 11 24H2 interface.

Another recently discovered bug has affected Task Manager, and the problem means that it reports that there are no processes running (when there are many, of course). Again, this is a really strange bug, and there is another issue where 24H2 seems to steal some of your precious disk spacebut in reality, this is not the case.

However, what 24H2 is clearly doing is behaving badly in all kinds of mysterious ways. As we already said, this is most likely related to the significant changes happening under the hood of the 24H2 version, which is built on a completely new platform (“Germanium”).
