NIXA, Mo. (KY3) – State Highway 160 is the main thoroughfare through Nixa. After an accident on Friday, November 1, some community members are concerned about safety at the Aldersgate Drive intersection.

According to some people in the industry, the intersection is no stranger to accidents.

“It’s probably about once a week,” said MJ King, who works near the busy intersection. “A few weeks ago, I think we had three in one week. It was ridiculous.

King said accidents are common there and she has witnessed them as they happen.

“We’ve been talking about this for months,” King said. “This has been such a huge problem. Several people will come here. Hey, did your cameras catch this accident so we can figure this out? »

However, this is not the first time concerns have been raised about this intersection. Return June 2021, Nixa police told KY3 News there were 12 crashes with injuries in the first six months of this year, compared to three the year before. More recently, Nixa police said there has not been an increase in accidents, but given how busy the intersection is, accidents may seem more frequent.

“There may be some that are reported and some that aren’t reported, but we just don’t know,” said Officer Brent Forgey. “It’s difficult to pick a particular intersection and immediately find the exact statistics.”

According to Forgey, Nixa PD collects crash data, which is then sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which compiles that information with other data from state departments. As of Nov. 4, MSHP did not have any data on the most recent crashes, but maps dating back to 2021 show several crashes occurring on Highway 160 and Aldersgate Drive.

Another thing to keep in mind, Forgey said, is that the holidays are approaching, which means more people will be on the roads, and on days when severe weather affects the area, more caution is needed.

“No matter what intersection you are at on the highway, you arrive at a t. Pay attention to road conditions. If you see traffic signs, speed limit signs slow down. Be careful,” Forgey said. “There may also be something you would like to avoid.”

However, something has to change for MJ King, who frequently sees accidents there.

“I also drive on these back roads, so I have a lot of slower passages,” King said. “It’s really scary to see all these cars passing here. I saw a lot of people turning on these lights.
