BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Election Day is tomorrow and Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane is working to ensure the election process is safe and secure.

In September, McGrane, along with all Idaho county clerks, signed a pledge promising to ensure voting in Idaho would be easy and secure.

Over the past few months, clerks have tested election equipment to ensure it functions properly and is accurate.

In order to prevent any form of cyberattack, the legislator ensured that no tabulation system is connected to the Internet.

Certain safeguards will be in place regarding the security of voting at polling stations.

“Some practices are as simple as verifying a person’s identity when they register to vote or verifying their identity when someone votes,” McGrane said. “Most voters will see that when they go to the polls, their driver’s license barcode will be scanned as part of this registration process. This speeds up the process, but also confirms that the person voting is who they say they are.

IDs from out of state will not be accepted.

Voters will also receive a paper record of their vote. Election officials will compare signatures on absentee ballots with voter registrations and driver’s licenses.

McGrane said this was all part of the actions his office took in this election.

“Validating the signatures of absentees who show up really ensures that we maintain the voter rolls. That means deporting people when they die, making sure criminals aren’t registered, making sure no non-citizens participate in our elections. These are all efforts we have underway.

Over the summer, the Secretary of State’s office also worked with Homeland Security to validate Idaho’s voter rolls as a proactive measure.
