Animal rights activists rally outside Winnipeg courthouse to demand justice for alleged cat killer

Dozens of animal advocates gathered outside the Winnipeg courthouse Monday to demand justice as alleged cat killer Irene Lima was scheduled to appear for her bail hearing.

“She must stay in prison. She poses a danger to animals, probably also to humans, so she has to stay where she is,” said animal rights activist Krista Blahut.

Chants of “No bail, stay in jail” rang out before the bail hearing as community members expressed anger over the alleged actions of Chad Kabecz and Irene Lima, who were arrested on Oct. 9 and quickly charged with numerous offenses after police say they discovered videos of the couple torturing and murdering cats and other small animals they had purchased online.

“As rescuers, we want to find safe homes for our animals and Chad and Irene look like normal people,” said Mistir Hari, who runs a cat shelter in Steinbach.

Founder of Hello Whiskers Kitten Rescue, Hari says the whole experience has traumatized rescuers like his own, not knowing who he can trust with the well-being of the animals he cares for so much.

“Luckily we didn’t, but these poor kittens did and it’s just monstrous.”

But before those present could even find their place in the courtroom, they were informed that they would have to return another day, as Lima’s legal team opted to postpone the bail hearing at a later date.

Even if this is not the outcome the crowd hoped for, their calls for justice will continue

As for Lima’s alleged accomplice in these horrific acts, Chad Kabecz, he is due back in court Tuesday.
