Extreme weather alert: Surrey shelters reopen as storm continues

With a wind warning in effect for Metro Vancouver, Surrey shelters are open again Monday evening (November 4).

A continuing severe weather warning for Metro Vancouver means additional shelter spaces are open again in Surrey this evening (Monday, November 4).

Due to the severe storm that hit the Lower Mainland last night, as well as continued high winds and possible heavy rain, the Surrey White Rock Severe Weather Response System has been activated. Two emergency sites will be opened to provide additional space for people to seek shelter from the elements.

Environment Canada has now issued a wind warning for Metro Vancouver, warning of very strong northwest winds with the potential to cause continued damage. Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected in the evening.

“Winds will decrease this evening as the frontal system moves inland and weakens,” the warning states. “Damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be thrown by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and tree limbs. Fallen trees. Motorists, especially in large vehicles, can expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong crosswinds.

The City of Surrey is urging people without indoor space to sleep to go to one of the shelters.

“If you sleep outside, please stay safe at shelters,” the city said on Twitter/X.
