Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday strongly objected to the Hindu temple incident in Brampton and said it in some ways reveals the “political space” that is being given to “extremist forces” in Canada.

He said this in response to questions related to the incident at Canada on Sunday and the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada, during a joint press briefing with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong here.

In Brampton, Canada, protesters waving Khalistan flags clashed with people at Sabha Hindu Temple Sunday and disrupted a consular event co-organized by temple authorities and the Indian consulate.

“You would have seen first a statement from our official spokesperson, as well as the expression of concern from our prime minister,” Jaishankar told reporters in Canberra.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is on an official visit to Australia from November 3 to 7.

“Let me make three comments. First, Canada has developed a habit of making allegations without providing details. Second, when we look at Canada, for us, the fact that…our diplomats under surveillance is something unacceptable,” he added. » said Jaishankar.

The development comes as relations between India and Canada remain deeply troubled over the North American country’s alleged support for Khalistan separatists and its accusation of India’s involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen designated a terrorist by India.

In a message on X on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence never weaken India’s resolve.” He added: “We expect the Canadian government to guarantee justice and uphold the rule of law. »

Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expecting perpetrators of violence to be prosecuted, while calling on the Government of Canada to ensure all places of worship are protected against such attacks.
