Ronaldo’s return “under Amorim” is mentioned, but he should “follow” another legend of the Red Devils

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham believes Cristiano Ronaldo would be “welcome” to return to the Premier League giants “under Ruben Amorim”.

Ronaldo returned to the Red Devils during the 2021 summer transfer window by signing him with Serie A giants Juventus.

The 2021/22 season has been a successful one for the striker, who has scored 24 goals in his 38 appearances in all competitions. However, sixth Man Utd finished the season without a trophy and failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag took charge at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and he came up against Ronaldo, who left his boyhood club at the end of 2022 after falling down the hierarchy under the Dutch head coach.

At the time, it was reported that Ronaldo was unhappy after Man Utd missed out on the Champions League. He was linked with several European teams, but joined Saudi side Al-Nassr after his contract with the Premier League giants was mutually terminated.

Ronaldo left Man Utd after criticizing Ten Hag, the Glazer family and several club legends in an infamous interview with Piers Morgan.

The Portugal international was never going to be seen at Man Utd again as long as Ten Hag remained in charge, but his dismissal and the appointment of Ruben Amorim could see him make a return down the line.

Sheringham believes Ronaldo would be “very welcome at Man Utd, but he also suspects he will move on “to bigger and better things” after he retires.

“Cristiano Ronaldo would be welcome at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he is on to bigger and better things,” Sheringham said.

“I think Ronaldo will follow the path of David Beckham by doing things outside of coaching, things that are more publicized around the world.

“I’m sure he would be welcome in any capacity coming back to the club, but I doubt he would be a manager.”

Ronaldo, 39, has entered the final stage of his career and Dietmar Hamann believes he is facing a “big problem”.

“Cristiano Ronaldo feels his career is coming to an end soon, that’s probably why he acted the way he did against Scotland,” Hamann said.

“His ego made him the player he is today. But I wasn’t a big fan of his antics during the Euros: he put his interests before those of Portugal.

“Ronaldo has scored a few goals in the Nations League, but is he making them a better team? I’m not sure, this is an extremely talented team that could win these games without him.

“Ronaldo is at a point in his career where he needs to start prioritizing the team over himself. I’m not sure about the manager’s part in team selection, which is a big problem.

“I would be very surprised if Cristiano Ronaldo reached 1000 career goals, I don’t think he can keep it up for that long.”
